New world news from Time: Everything to Know About the 2020 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony
With the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo now postponed until 2021 due to coronavirus, we still have about a year to go until the Summer Games return.
But before the first Summer Olympics without Michael Phelps since 1996 truly get underway next year, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as they will still be called, will kick off with a highly-anticipated Opening Ceremony. The Opening Ceremony has been an integral part of every Olympics since the first modern games were held in Athens in 1896 and presents an opportunity for the host country to promote its national identity to the world. The show is typically watched by hundreds of millions of television viewers globally in addition to the tens of thousands of spectators who flock to the Olympic Stadium for the proceedings.
As is tradition, the 2020 Olympics Opening Ceremony in Tokyo will be comprised of a number of key events, including the artistic program, the parade of athletes, the lighting of the Olympic flame and the symbolic release of the doves of peace.
Here’s a complete guide to the 2020 Olympics Opening Ceremony.
When is the 2020 Opening Ceremony?
The new date and time of the 2020 Opening Ceremony is still up in the air. But whenever it does take place, for those watching in the U.S., it’s important to note that Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of America’s East Coast (and 16 hours ahead of the West Coast). This story will be updated with the latest primetime schedule once available.
For the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, a city with a similar time difference, NBC delayed its U.S. telecast by 12 hours to coincide with evening primetime viewing. It’s likely that the network will handle the Tokyo Summer Olympics similarly.
Where will the Opening Ceremony be held?
The 2020 Opening Ceremony will be held at Japan’s New National Stadium in the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo. The $1.5-billion, three-tiered complex designed by prominent Japanese architect Kengo Kuma is expected to seat 68,000 during the 2020 Summer Games. Capacity will be reduced to 58,000 for the 2020 Paralympics to create more room for handicap accessible seating.
The open-air, oval-shaped stadium features a wooden lattice design that evokes traditional styles seen in Japanese shrines and pagodas. Its wood and steel composite roof — which was partially sourced from Japanese-grown larch and cedar trees — opens at the center to allow hot air to escape.
The stadium is intended to blend in with the surrounding parkland and “restore the link that Tokyo lost with nature.”
Who’s planning the opening ceremony?
The three key creative directors for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2020 Olympics and 2020 Paralympics are Mansai Nomura, Takashi Yamazaki and Hiroshi Sasaki.
Nomura is a renowned Japanese actor, director and producer who is known for his work in kyogen, a form of traditional Japanese comic theater, and film. He will serve as chief executive creative director for the ceremonies, which means he will oversee production of all four events and ensure each of them stays true to an overall theme.
“Simply put, my focus is on inclusion. I don’t want to just show diversity, but to create a harmony within it,” Nomura told the Tokyo Weekender. “This concept hails from my experiences through kyogen and I consider it my mission to share it.”
Nomura has also said that he wants to incorporate Japan’s witty spirit into the ceremonies. “I want the ceremonies to be full of wit,” he told the Japan Times. “That’s something I feel strongly about. From tradition to the cutting edge, Japan has many methods and ideas that are full of wit. We want to make full use of those things in the ceremonies.”
Yamazaki, an award-winning movie director, has been appointed executive creative director for the two Olympic ceremonies while Sasaki, the creative director of the Olympic flag handover segment for the Rio 2016 Closing Ceremony, will fill the role of executive creative director for the Paralympic events.
The Tokyo Organizing Committee has also named five creative directors for the four ceremonies: movie producer and writer Genki Kawamura, creative producer Yoshie Kris, singer-songwriter Sheena Ringo, creative technologist Kaoru Sugano and choreographer MIKIKO.
What can we expect from the Opening Ceremony?
The Tokyo Organizing Committee has laid out a “Basic Policy” for the overall concept of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics that lists peace, coexistence, reconstruction, future, Japan and Tokyo, athletes, involvement and excitement as the core themes to highlight throughout the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
As the Olympic Charter mandates, the 2020 Opening Ceremony will combine formal ceremonial proceedings with an artistic program that showcases the history and culture of Japan.
The ceremonial aspects of the 2020 Opening Ceremony will include the entry of Japanese head of state Shinzō Abe, a performance of Japan’s national anthem, the parade of the athletes, the symbolic release of doves, the opening of the Games by Abe, the raising of the Olympic flag and performance of the Olympic anthem, the taking of the Olympic oath by an athlete, the taking of the Olympic oath by an official, the taking of the Olympic oath by a coach, and the Olympic flame and torch relay.
Details of the artistic program are usually kept secret until the day of the performance, but as was true for the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony, Tokyo’s will likely feature thousands of performers outfitted in intricate costumes, elaborate set pieces, spectacular music and dance numbers, and appearances by renowned Japanese celebrities — one of the most exciting moments of the 2016 Opening Ceremony came when famed Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen strutted down the catwalk to “The Girl From Ipanema.”
Who will attend the ceremony?
More than 11,000 athletes from 206 nations are expected to attend the 2020 Opening Ceremony in addition to the tens of thousands of spectators that will flock to the event.
As far as Team USA goes, while only a few U.S. athletes have already qualified for the 2020 Olympics, it’s likely that previous gold medalists like gymnast Simone Biles, swimmer Katie Ledecky and tennis star Serena Williams are all but guaranteed to compete in the Games — and could participate in the Opening Ceremony’s parade of nations. Qualifying competitions and Olympic Trials, which vary by sport, should take place leading up to the Games to determine the full Team USA roster.
In addition to athletes, many countries will also send senior officials to the 2020 Opening Ceremony as part of their delegations. For the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen Pence, led the U.S. Delegation.
What’s the history of the Olympics Opening Ceremony?
The Opening Ceremony has been an integral part of every Olympics since the first modern games were held in Athens in 1896. The ceremony represents the official start of an Olympic Games and affords the host country an opportunity to showcase their national identity on a global stage.
“The protocol and splendor of the Olympic ceremonies, which go hand-in-hand with the celebration of the Games as everyone knows them today, make this event unique and unforgettable,” the Olympic Charter reads.
However, the Charter also notes that the Opening Ceremony of today’s Games is worlds away from what took place in Athens over 120 years ago and that some elements of Olympic Opening Ceremony protocol have only been gradually established over time.
For example, while Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the International Olympic Committee, originally envisioned the modern Olympics as a celebration of both athletic and artistic achievement, as athletics became the focal point of the Games, the artistic program portion of the Opening Ceremony continued to increase in scale.
With each successive Games, the Opening Ceremony grows into a bigger and grander event that now attracts tens of millions of viewers worldwide.

New world news from Time: All Signs Point to Tokyo Olympics Being Postponed
IOC members, national Olympic committees and athletes were all racing toward the same conclusion Monday: The Tokyo Olympics are not going to take place this summer.
Craig Reedie, a longtime member of the International Olympic Committee, told The Associated Press that everyone can see where things are headed, with the coronavirus pandemic spreading and Olympic hopefuls around the world unable to train.
“In the balance of probabilities, the information known about conditions in Japan and the COVID-19’s effect on the rest of world clearly indicates the likelihood of postponement,” Reedie said. “The length of postponement is the major challenge for the IOC.”
Earlier in the day, IOC member Dick Pound told USA Today that he had reached the same conclusion about the games, which are scheduled to start July 24. A tweet put out by the newspaper read: “The 2020 Summer Olympics Have Been Postponed Over Coronavirus Concerns.”
The IOC said no decision had been made, and Reedie was quick to acknowledge that he was speaking only for himself and not because of any insight provided to him by IOC president Thomas Bach, who will guide the final decision. Pound did not return a message left by AP. Earlier in the day, after Pound’s pronouncement, an IOC spokesman said, “It is the right of every IOC member to interpret the decision of the IOC (executive board) from Sunday.”
Indeed, the interpretations and opinions are just that and haven’t always been spot-on. Last month, Pound told AP that cancellation, not postponement, was the only real option if the Tokyo Games couldn’t start on time.
But a lot has changed since then, and the rapid momentum of the “postpone” movement among athletes and nations seemed to diminish the likelihood that it will take all of four weeks for the IOC to reach a conclusion. That was the timeline the IOC’s executive committee decided on Sunday when it announced it was putting together working groups to study the massive logistical issues involved in postponing the games.
Among those issues include the availability of venues in Japan, the disruption to the international sports calendar during whatever new date is chosen, the resetting of qualifying procedures, and insurance considerations; both the IOC and the Japanese organizing committee hold massive policies, the legalese of which will take time to unwind.
After that IOC announcement, however, both Canada and Australia — whose senior Olympic official is IOC member John Coates, the leader of the Tokyo inspection team — sent word that they would not or could not send teams to Japan for an Olympics that start in July.
“I know this is heartbreaking for so many people — athletes, coaches, staff and fans — but this was absolutely the right call, and everyone should follow their lead,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.
Other key delegations that have pushed for a postponement include World Athletics, the international federation for the centerpiece sport of the Olympics, along with Olympic committees in Brazil, Slovenia and Germany. USA Swimming and USA Track and Field, which combine to form about a third of the U.S. team, also want a new date.
Athletes also grew louder in their request for postponement. A track group called The Athletics Association joined another athlete group, Global Athlete, in pressing the IOC to act.
The track group is led by two-time Olympic champion Christian Taylor of the U.S., who said more than 4,000 track and field athletes responded to a survey, and 87% said their training had been adversely affected by the coronavirus.
Individual athletes continued to speak out as well.
“Although I am upset that the Olympics will not be happening this year, I agree that this is the best decision in order to keep the athletes and spectators healthy and to prevent the virus from spreading further,” U.S. gymnast Morgan Hurd said in a tweet, reacting to Pound’s comments.
And while saying it’s a done deal might be jumping the gun, it feels inevitable the announcement will come.

New best story on Hacker News: Launch HN: Fly.io (YC W20) – Deploy app servers close to your users
529 by mrkurt | 220 comments on Hacker News.
Hello Hacker News! We're Kurt, Jerome, and Michael from fly.io ( https://fly.io/ ). We're building a platform to run Docker applications close to end users. It's kind of like a content delivery network, but for backend servers. I helped build Ars Technica and spent the majority of my time trying to make the site fast. We used a content delivery network to cache static content close to anonymous readers and it worked very well for them. But the most valuable readers were not these, but the ones who paid for subscriptions. They wanted personalized content and features for interacting with the community – and we couldn't make those fast. Content delivery networks don't work for Ars Technica's best customers. Running Docker apps close to users helps get past the "slow" speed of light. Most interactions with an app server seem slow because of latency between the hardware it's running on (frequently in Virginia) and the end user (frequently not in Virginia). Moving server apps close to users is a simple way to decrease latency, sometimes by 80% or more. fly.io is really a way to run Docker images on servers in different cities and a global router to connect users to the nearest available instance. We convert your Docker image into a root filesystem, boot tiny VMs using a project called Firecracker (recently discussed here: https://ift.tt/32XLUFu ) and then proxy connections to it. As your app gets more traffic, we add VMs in the most popular locations. We wrote a Rust based router to distribute incoming connections from end users. The router terminates TLS when necessary (some customers handle their own TLS) and then hands the connection off to the best available Firecracker VM, which is frequently in a different city. Networking took us a lot of time to get right. Applications get dedicated IP addresses from an Anycast block. Anycast is an internet routing feature that lets us "announce" from multiple datacenters, and then core routers pick the destination with the shortest route (mostly). We run a mesh Wireguard network for backhaul, so in flight data is encrypted all the way into a user application. This is the same kind of network infrastructure the good content delivery networks use. We got a handful of enterprise companies to pay for this, and spent almost a year making it simple to use — it takes 3 commands to deploy a Docker image and have it running in 17 cities: https://ift.tt/2wlngCT . We also built "Turboku" to speed up Heroku apps. Pick a Heroku app and we deploy the slug on our infrastructure .. typical Heroku apps are 800ms faster on fly.io: https://fly.io/heroku/ We've also built some features based on Hacker News comments. When people launch container hosting on Hacker News, there's almost always a comment asking for: 1. gRPC support: apps deployed to fly.io can accept any kind of TCP connection. We kept seeing people say "hey I want to run gRPC servers on this shiney container runtime". So you can! You can specify if you want us to do TLS or HTTP for an app, or just do everything yourself. 2. Max monthly spend: unexpected traffic spikes happen, and the thought of spending an unbounded amount of money in a month is really uncomfortable. You can configure fly.io apps with a max monthly budget, we'll suspend them when they hit that budget, and then re-enable them at the beginning of the next month. One of the best parts of building this has been seeing the problems that developers are trying to solve, often problems we didn't know about beforehand. My favorite is a project to re-encode MP3s at variable speeds for specific users (apparently the Apple Audiobook player has no option for playback speed). Another is "TensorFlow at the edge" — they trained a TensorFlow model to detect bots and run predictions before handling requests. We're really happy we get to show this to you all, thank you for reading about it! Please let us know your thoughts and questions in the comments.
New best story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Have you been laid off?
524 by Peretus | 400 comments on Hacker News.
I work remotely as a front-end developer at a VC-funded, series B startup. Funding has dried up as investors with financial exposure to anything retail or entertainment-related are hemorrhaging cash. The company leadership told us that starting immediately, all employees (including the fully-remote workers like myself) are on mandatory unpaid leave. Job cuts in 2019 were already up a whopping 351% from the previous year[1]. Considering the COVID-19 outbreak, I'm concerned that many other tech workers like me might be updating their resumes and entering a stagnant job market. Alternatively, organizations may view this as a great time to gain additional market share. What do you think? If you're a tech worker, have you been laid off or do you expect to be laid off soon? If you are a hiring manager, what is the current hiring status at your company? [1] https://ift.tt/2xK1zwt

New best story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Is UK government insane or genius?
419 by TheAlchemist | 611 comments on Hacker News.
While virtually all countries adopt the lockdown strategy to eliminate the virus spread, UK is apparently going on with 'herd immunity' strategy. It's pretty well explained in this tweet: https://twitter.com/iandonald_psych/status/12385183716516495... Basically, the idea is to get the young infected, as the virus seems to be relatively inoffensive for young people, and thus becoming immune. Once the country reach a threshold percentage of immune population, the virus cannot spread effectively anymore, hence protecting the vulnerable ones. My gut feeling is that this is the rational thing to do, however only in theory. In practice, people won't be disciplined about isolating vulnerable ones in the first phase, thus leading to disaster.
New best story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Book recommendations for understanding financial systems?

With all the craziness this week in the stock market I've become interested in learning about how money works in our society. Fiat currency, the federal reserve, the stock market, etc. Any good book recommendations?
